Social Media has graduated from ‘This is a Fad and Will Pass‘ test.

Despite traditional marketeers lambasting social media as lacking ‘______’ add excuse de jour.

The converted know differently. Six or seven years from birth (or is it 20) the value proposition of social networking is still valid. Help to spread content, increase in lead generation and a major driver of inbound leads. Every social marketer understands this nugget.

At this stage the value propositions of social media is clearly defined. We have passed the honeymoon period and transitioned into the daily realities of how can I be better at business because of social media not just better at social media.

However, social media and social networking is not for every person or every organization.

Some are just not willing to accept change. And that’s ok for them and I feel for their employees and families.

This is a reality. Changing the mindset of people to act like publishers and media companies is difficult.

Not every business can and will succeed in this social business world.

The shift in mindset is the largest single hurdle to the adoption of any change in any organisation. Perhaps we should frame this pivot simply as a resistance to change and the fear of the unknown.

and the reply

Accepting what social marketer know is ‘we are now publishers’ brings the cost of content marketing and social networking starkly into perspective.

At least us not forget that social media is differently expensive to ‘traditional marketing’. Despite the clear value proposition, it is not a strong enough argument to convince the C-suite.

Nor should it be. Articulating and proving a clear connection to a return on investment is required.

Social media is more complex than ‘build it and they will come’. The constant pressure to generate high-quality content that engages teaches and solves the problems of prospective customers is relentless.

Was marketing actually easier with traditional marketing and ad agencies? I am not convinced.

Social Marketer Bring Business Success – in these 7 Daily Steps.

These Seven Steps will help turn you into a social marketer up your publishing efforts and grow your business.

1. Write Daily — The obvious first step. Do you know what the definition of a professional writer is? An amateur that practices. You will be rewarded when the quality of your content adds value to your potential and existing customers. This Simple Content Value Test  is a very good reality check. The test is; would you pay 99 cent or .99 euro to read your own blog post? Answer truthfully and be fair. If the answer is no, don’t press the publish button.

2. Read Daily — The not so obvious second step. Read and comment on blogs and industry news sources. Look for bloggers inside and outside of your niche. Read to get ideas and different perspectives on how other are marketing products and services.

3. Be your Customer — Think like your ideal customer. And create content and write about how your products/services will remove their ‘pain points’. The definition of marketing is — creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings (products/services for money) that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

4. Holistic Marketing — Social media is one component part of your marketing mix — not the entirety. Break apart the silos in your organisation, talk with your SEO people, your PPC, creatives and customer service departments. There is synergy between all these, therefore, build bridge and close the gaps. Be whole in your holistic marketing.

5. Repurpose Content —Be a digital dandelion not a cannon ball. Consider planting many ‘small’ seeds of your content throughout the web, allow them to germinate and grow and drive traffic back to your websites. The opposite is one major impact report/event that will burn very bright for a short time and die out. Repurposing is simple — from this blog post create a presentation and uploaded it to slideshare or maybe convert it into a 10 minute podcast. Remember every person consumes content differently and differently throughout the day. Repurpose your content to take advantage of this opportunity.

6. Ask for Feedback — From your customer, coworkers, and social networking friends. Use the feedback to refine your writing and content marketing strategy. Look at your analytics to see what content piece has gotten views. And consider creating more of that.

7. Spread the Message / Network — You pressed publish now watch that traffic and money come in…..waiting…waiting…waiting. Nothing is happening! How about if you email your contact list with ‘here is my new blog post’ and ask for comments? Post to Twitter, LinkedIn, your Facebook Page, stumbleupon, etc. One tip is to post to Twitter a few times throughout the day. As not every follower of your read your first tweet. Point 7 is not a complete SEO / spread the word checklist and is not intended as such. Try here, or this list or these suggestions.

8. Bonus – Sharpen the Saw — Lifted from Steven Covey. Points 1-7 are the saw and the 8th improves each. Set SMART goals and ask for constrictive feedback and improve the entire process.

9. Bonus 2 – Be Passionate – The single most common element of successful social marketers is passion. Many social marketers are a cog in the corporate machinery. Delight your customers with your genuine passion for what you do and what social media can do for the company. Be the beacon that by regularly communicating to the entire company on the impact, promise and value of social media. Your enthusiasm will be contagious!
