Email Multi-Channel Marketing — Local Style

My wife and I have two beautiful healthy children. Both are growing up fast. So fast that they have outgrown the indoor activities of eating and sleeping and watching Peppa Pig videos. Both are now involved with after school activities.

Just the usual — football, soccer, GAA, swimming, music, dance classes, etc. These thing that take up vast amounts of time and energy, more than just being the driver. In the ‘states’ they use the term soccer mom (dad) to describe the chauffeuring of children. For us it’s the stuff we do as parents to help our kids to excel. Offer the opportunities and let-them-shine-kind-of-thing.

During the past two years, our daughter has been taking drama and dance lessons at a theatre company. They are learning to become thespians, ah #LifeSkills.

To my surprise my daughter (age 7) got an email (addressed to her, but, using my account), it was her first email #exciting. This email was an ask to follow said theatre company on Twitter. (first email and first follow my request, hum…)

Email Inbox to Zero

A week past and it was time for some email cleanup, (ever heard of Merlin Mann and his 43 folder and inbox zero ? The stuff is impressive, watch the video to reclaim your inbox, seriously no hype).

Before deleting the message, (well she does not have a Twitter handle yet) I clicked the’ Join me on Twitter’ button just to have a look at their account.

Ok they have 69 followers and tweet a couple of times a day.

Dipping the toes in the water and making social media happen for them. Proud of them! Here is some link love – they are The Drogheda School of Preforming Arts – The Little Duke Theatre.

Always willing to help a local business so I clicked the Follow me request.

My curiosity not fulfilled with the follow. I decided to click on the link in the top tweet in their stream. Obviously it is a Facebook link with the fb.me URL.

The link took me to a page asking me to like their Facebook page!

Here is the page which the link directed me towards.

It’s a ‘Like my Facebook Page’ request. Ok I get it — connect with us on all these social channels. Impressive.

This began with an email asking me to Follow, a tweet that asks ‘like us on Facebook’. And on their Facebook page? There are very active with loads of engaging content, pictures and more pictures of performances they have produced. Truly impressive and engaging.

Searching further they recently joined Facebook in September 2112. So they are newish to social networking and I have to give them kudos as they are doing it well.

Email Multi-Channel Marketing Takeaways

We all need takeaways — I am a marketer after all (and a proud father).

1) Connect your Customers and Prospects Across Multiple Channels

All businesses can benefit from extending their social reach.

Reach is important (no not the numbers game) but, engagement and driving people to action is where the value really exists. You need a network first and the size of that network does matter.

Use the Tweeter ‘Find Friends’ feature under the #Discovery on the main Twitter web app tab. Enter email addresses of your contacts/customer and Twitter sends them an email Follow me a request.

Facebook offer a similar ‘send an email asking a contact to join’ feature.

Thinking about this email to request to join’ feature. Very few, actually none, of the people I have met in the last three years has sent me a Facebook email asking me to like their page. Obviously an opportunity for your business.

2)Build a Network Fans and Followers, which will:

Extend the reach of your content and expose your business to a larger number of people and businesses. This is the premises of LinkedIn. You are valuable as a contact and so are the hundreds of people in your network.

3)Provide Valuable Content

Content is the fuel for your social media sports Car. How is your content strategy working out for you? The content discussion is broader and deeper than a two-sentence footnote to a marketing takeaway point. Check back for more on content marketing.

Social media is a great tool to generate awareness of your brand, making sales or deepening the loyalty of existing customers. The content you share needs to educate, engage and/or teach. If your content doesn’t do those things then maybe you are pushing advertisements through social.

And how is that working for you?
