Twitter usage has quadrupled its active user base since 2010, new research from the Pew Research Center shows. Twitter has seen its daily usage increase substantially in the last two years. Twitter adoption has increased to 15% of all online adults as of February 2012. With 8% of all online adults being daily Twitter users. This daily Twitter usage has doubled, from 4% to 8%, in the last two years. The previous survey was conducted in November 2010.

This Twitter usage survey was conducted in the US, therefore, actual results will vary from country to country. Your regional trends may differ.

The Pew Research web site states “Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project is a is one of seven projects that make up the Pew Research Center, they are a nonpartisan, nonprofit “fact tank” that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world”.

Twitter Usage Smartphones Adoption Increase the usage of Twitter

The rise of smartphones might account for some of the uptick in usage because smartphone users are particularly likely to be using Twitter.

There are some stand out usage groups from this study

  • African-Americans – >28% of online user are Twitter users!, with 13% daily users.
  • Young Adults – 26% of 18-29 year old are Twitter users and 31% of 18-24 year old are Twitter users
  • City vs Rural – city people more likely then rural people to use Twitter.

Who are all These Twitter Users?

So 15% of all Internet users use Twitter. Of those 15%:

  • 53% are Female,  47% are Male
  • Age profile of those 15%:  1/4 are 18-29; and 14% are 30-49 year olds.
  • Income breakdown- the two largest groups earn <30K$ and >75k$ a year.
  • Education level – not graduated from High school (leaving certificate) and University degree are largest group

Across all age groups, bar the over 65’s, the usage and adoption has increased since the November 2010 survey.

Twitter and the “Smartphone Difference”

The growth of smartphones usage amoung young adults and social networking go hand-in-hand. “Twitter usage is highly correlated with the use of mobile technologies” and “One in five smartphone owners (20%) are Twitter users, with 13% using the service on a typical day” this compares to “feature phone” users which are half as likely to use their mobile phones for Twitter.
