Twitter List Essential – How-To Slow Twitter To Build Your Brand and Stay. On. Top.
Running is tiring. Running to walk is downright silly.
Yet, on Twitter we keep running and running and running and still cannot keep up.
Does it feel like you are running to walk on Twitter? Yes? Well, you are not alone.
I’ve never be able to keep up — with running or with Tweets. No matter how much I try.
But, really, keeping up was never going to happen, anyway.
The maths proves it. My sanity shows it. Here is how:
Simple Twitter Lists Math and How Twitter Lists Solves The Problem
If you follow 100 people and they tweet 10 times day, that’s about 1000 tweets. If you are on twitter 1 hour per day you will see about 40 tweets. 40 is not bad. 40 is manageable number.
Now, if you follow 200, or 500 or 1000 people, then it’s not 40 tweets in the hour, but, 80 or 200 or 400. 400 tweets per hour is running to walk territory!
You know exactly what I mean.
Why? 1) because you’ve told me so, and 2) you’re reading this post on how to slow down Twitter!
We both know reading 400 Tweets in one hour is just not possible. Let alone replying, or holding a conversation.
I hear you asking me ‘how do people follow 1000, 5000 or 10,000 people and read all those tweets?
They don’t and you won’t. Just.Not.Possible.
To save your sanity, and letting you walk before you run. Use Twitter Lists and different Twitter tools to manage Twitter life.

Access Twitter Lists this Way
Go to your Twitter profile.
Click on your photo, either the 1) next to the ‘Search Twitter’.
or 2) picture on the left…
…both take you to 3) your ‘Edit Profile’ page. See the Tweets, Following, Followers, Favourites, and finally LISTS in the red box.
Clicking on List takes you to your ‘list page’.
I’ve create or subscribed to 16 different lists. Yes, you also can subscribe to other people lists.

If I click on the ‘BizActionGroup’ list…I’m taken to the ‘BizActionGroup’ list page. I see…navigation, tweets, and recently added.
Looking at the left pane the title is BizActionGroup. This is a public list by Urban Renström, has my description for the list, the number of members, etc.
Here is where I can see the Tweets from people on my list. I Reply, ReTweet, favourite tweets (and those three little dots? I’ll ignore them for the moment).
The two halves of Twitter list is ‘Subscribed to’ and ‘Member of’. Subscribed to is sort of odd name, a misnomer, as it contains the list I’ve created and the list I’ve subscribing to.
The ‘Member of’ is a listing of all the list people have added me to.
Also an Edit and Delete button. Both ‘do what’s written on the tin’. Edit allow me to add or remove people from this list.

What Kind of Twitter Lists should you Create?
Here are my list suggestions.
- Client / Customer List — (Private – naturally) My first suggestion is list of your existing customer and clients. A very good idea to support your customer with a RT, or a mention. And a list of your customer ensures you never miss out.
- People who RT, Fave and Mention you — (Public or Private) This group of people are your supporters. Treat them very in marketing speak they are brand supporters and brand advocates and people sharing your tweets is Earned Media. These can be your customers if you treat them right and the time is right.
- Competitors — (Private – naturally) well because ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’ comes to mind. Also can glean who their customer are and maybe if you play your cards correctly you can steal one or two.
- Journalists — (Public) especially local journalists. As local reports are always on the hunt for stories and news. And building up relationships with reports is only good practice. #PayItForward kind of thing.
- Bloggers — (Public) most marketing niches have people who are prolific blogger and most have twitter accounts. Building relationships with this is only good practive. #PayItForward kind of thing.
- Influencers — (Public) as with the Bloggers list, every marketing niche has influential people you need to court. This list help you stay on top of their Twitter activity.
- List of Resources for your customer! — (Public) (using Jay Bear’s idea Helping is the new Selling) Ask people, or find out what resources your prospects and customer need to ease their work and create a list based on those request.
