Weekly News Review
Weekly news review is a weekly look at the news shaping the marketing world. Emphasis on Social Media, Content Marketing and Email Marketing and the business supporting us all.
1)Twitter and Google join forces (Again!)
Twitter and Google are getting hitched again. Between 2009 -2011 Twitter shared the ‘fire hose’ of tweets with Google. The relationship went sour and they broke up (short version). But, who is helping who in this renewed partnership? A little bit of both probably.
Google’s problem is they are missing the ‘real time’ element of news and life. Twitter’s problem is the slowing of new user. The deal can help both.
What does this deal mean for you and I? The official Twitter announcement offer scant clues.
Speculation is that tweets will be instantly displayed in search results, at the time when we search for something. Search in Google for local seafood restaurant and tweets matching your query will be displayed. Powerful stuff for me as the consumer, as I get ‘real-time’ updates and powerful for me as a business because I get my brand in front of people not using Twitter.
Yes, there is a downside to all of this especially as ill-timed and ill-humored messages will also be surface and displayed. Carnage can ensue.
We do know:
- Twitter will allow Google to display tweets in real time (putting prominence on)
- Real Time Marketing (Tweeting on events as they happen with the goal of getting noticed)
- Hashtags will be searchable on the search engine results pages (Placing more importance on the usability of Hashtage)
- Search and social need to be even more intertwined
- Deal validates the importance of social and content marketing
- More earned media on Twitter posts

2) Twitter Ships Official WordPress Plugin
Twitter released an official Twitter plugin for WordPress. It bundles Twitter features and functionality into an installable plugin for WordPress sites.
The news is interesting because it signals a subtle shift in support to wordpress owners. Many, many plugins offer better functionality, however, comforting Twitter is actually supporting blogs in this way.
Some of the features the Plugin can help with are:
- Embedded Tweet
- Embedded Twitter video
- Tweet button
- Twitter Cards
- Twitter Analytics
- Follow button
- Twitter ads conversion tracking
3)Facebook Product Ads Announced
How to use? Select use the objective – ‘Clicks to Website’ or ‘Website Conversions’ and the option to add multiple images becomes available. Up to 5 images are possible. Put your creative hat on your head and envision a story using 5 different pictures or images? Or display 5 different products. Or a complete outfit – shoes, dress, top, jewellery, jacket, and a hat. Hum. Food for thought and Further reserch, #FTFR
Powerful stuff, game changing stuff.
